    Im confused about how he added the yeast nutrient and campden tablets at the same time. Seems counterproductive. Can anyone help me understand?

    • @HawthornFarms
      @HawthornFarms 10 місяців тому

      As long as you are adding the actual yeast til the campden clears, you'll be fine. Campden will not affect the nutrients at all. Campden is killing the living organisms, if any are present.

      Out of curiosity, did you have one and if so, did you do any extra framing to strengthen and anchor it? I also live in Montana and have been watching videos from people that live in windy places for ideas on how they built theirs. Many did additional wood framing to keep it stable and screwed all the panels into the tracks to keep them from popping out, things like that. Other brands are so expensive, I'm trying to decide if by making some of these modifications, I don't have to spend $10,000 for a similar size.

    Great stuff! But why add sugar and then sterilise juice,would not be better to add the sugar the next day as this boosts the initial bad bacteria that you want to kill using Campden tabs? many thanks.

    Thank you very much for the review and the ideas. I'm in Connecticut. I bought the greenhouse for my girlfriend and am doing some research to lay out the best way to set it up starting at the time of assembly, which will be sometime before the thaw I hope. I figure it will take a couple of weekends to get the trench/foundation prepared, especially if I try to build in something like your solar and plumbing solutions. Hope you have a mild winter/rainy season.

    Wow, that's high ABV!! I actually made s dandelion and orange mead this spring which came out 18% and my starting gravity was 1.127 but it went all the way down to 0.992. Not exactly what I was shooting for but the honey was super strong and I used champagne yeast. In the end, I like it. It's currently only 3 months old and it's already really good, the alcohol bite is all but gone despite the 18% ABV. After another 3 months, it'll be amazing

    you can use clear garbage bags, just double bag it or triple bag it. the cool thing about it is you can see and hear the bubles through the bags and keep an eye on them for when they stop cooking alcohol.

  • @AkuaKamau

    Why not put the melon pieces in a blender then squeeze it afterwards to get out more of the juice? Just curious.

    • @dfgdfbsdfvv832
      @dfgdfbsdfvv832 2 роки тому

      you can strain after its done. me personally i will put about 2 cups of sugar per liter, with wine yeast, usually i did bread yeast and 1 cup of sugar per liter, the melons have sugar in them already. too much sugar will slow down how fast it cooks and makes alcohol. the faster its done the less bitter it will taste. theres a fine line, experimenting alot is the only way, this my first time doing watermelon hooch. I used to make brews in prison.

    Nice video and really showing the process with the tablets for controlled ferment. One question though - how did you get a plastic bucket that had oysters in that clean that you can make a fermentation it in without flavour transfer? Impressive!

    We have a ton of birds on our property, and my biggest concern is that they will eat some, and I know they will. So is this seed safe for them? We garden for wildlife, so we are careful not to do anything to hurt them.
